Alaska Ausflugsprogramme | Ab Mc.Carthy und Kennicott

Ein Besuch der beiden historischen Minenstädtchen McCarthy und Kennicott ist immer ein Garant für grandioses Alaska-Landschaftskino mit einem Schuss Abenteuer. Beide Orte liegen im Herzen des Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, dem mit 53.000 Quadratkilometern größten Nationalpark der USA (Zum Vergleich: Das Bundesland Niedersachsen ist 47.000 qkm groß). Hier vereinigen sich die Gebirgszüge der Wrangell, Chugach und St. Elias Mountains zu einem hochalpinen Universum. 9 der16 höchsten Gipfel des Landes befinden sich in diesem Park! Das interessante McCarthy-Kennecott Historical Museum ist im ehemaligen Eisenbahn-Depot untergebracht. Mit dem Taxi gelangt man ins acht Kilometer entfernte Kennicott. Wie ein überdimensioniertes Adlernest klebt das vielstöckige Minengebäude oberhalb des Kennicott Gletschers an einem Felsen – ein kurioser Anblick. Besucher werden von Guides durch die riesige Mühle geführt, wo das Erz zerhackt und das Kupfer konzentriert wurde. Zu sehen sind auch andere Gebäude, etwa die Behausungen der Minenarbeiter, ein Eisenbahn-Depot und ein Wasserkraftwerk. Das Ensemble der rot bemalten Gebäude vor den steil aufragenden Felsen ist ein spektakuläres Fotomotiv. Der Weg nach McCarthy/Kennicott ist weit: Man verlässt den Richardson Highway bei Mile 82.6. Von hier sind es noch rund 160 Kilometer – zunächst 50 Kilometer auf dem asphaltierten Edgerton Highway bis zum Ort Chitina. Von dort geht es weiter in Richtung Osten auf der McCarthy Road. Oder man steigt in ein Flugzeug und landet nach einem landschaftlich umwerfenden Kurzflug in McCarthy. Die staubige Schotterstraße folgt der alten Eisenbahntrasse der Copper River & Northwest Railroad, auf der früher das Kupfer von der Kennecott Mine nach Cordova befördert wurde. Auf den ersten paar Kilometern hat man eine tollen Blick auf die Chugach Mountains mit ihren bis zu 2800 Meter hohen Gipfeln. Bei Mile 17 überquert die McCarthy Road die Kuskulana River Bridge. Diese Eisenbahnbrücke aus dem Jahr 1910 spannt sich 160 Meter über eine 72 Meter tiefe Schlucht. Nach knapp 100 Kilometern endet die McCarty Road an einer Brücke über den Kennicott River, die man nur zu Fuß überqueren kann. Von dort sind es nur noch wenige Schritte bis zum winzigen Ort McCarthy, der ganze 53 Einwohner zählt. Nachdem im Jahr 1900 in der Gegend Kupfer gefunden worden war, formierte sich eine Gruppe wohlhabender Investoren zur Kennecott Copper Corporation (ein Angestellter hatte Kennicott falsch buchstabiert), baute die Copper River & Northwest Railroad und die berühmte Million Dollar Bridge. Sie gründete die Industriesiedlung Kennicott und erwirtschaftete zwischen 1911 und 1938 über 100 Millionen Dollar, so viel wie keine andere Kupfermine je zuvor.

This flightseeing tour is our most popular and has three different routes available; Bagley Icefield, University Range and the Wrangell Mountains. Each route takes in the essence of what Wrangell-St. Elias is all about; some of the highest mountains and largest glaciers in North America, a variety of stunning land forms, beautiful green U shaped valleys and the resident wildlife. Your pilot will point out the most interesting features and explain how this beautiful land came to be. The pilots are especially good at spotting wildlife after many years and hours looking to catch a glimpse of the local inhabitants. Weather sometimes dictates which tour may be the best so be sure to get your pilot’s advice before choosing.


WS#2 Wrangell St. Elias Mountain Flight from Chitina | Kennicott History Tour

Meet us at the Chitina Airport and take a spectacular flight through Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. See the major peaks of both the Wrangell and St. Elias Mountain Ranges, Kennicott, Root and Gates Glaciers, Stairway Icefall, Erie Mine, Kennicott and McCarthy. Join your guide for a a Kennicott History Tour which includes a 2.5 hour guided tour of Kennicott and lunch at Kennicott Glacier Lodge and van transfers. Hop the shuttle to the frontier town of McCarthy to visit the local museum and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of an Alaskan bush community. Explore the historic town built in the early part of the century. Enjoy the scenic flight back departing at 5:00 pm.

WS#3 Full Day Root Glacier Hike

Enjoy all the benefits of the half day hike but with additional time to explore the glaciers dynamic features. After “lunch with a view”, the possibilities are endless. You and your guide may decide to head up the glacier towards the massive 7,000 Stairway Icefall. You may also set your sights to Donoho Falls and the thundering cave it creates as it tunnels its way under the Root Glacier. Either way, this hike is sure to leave you spellbound and eager to share your discoveries for years to come. Note: No experience necessary but participants should be able to hike about 5 miles on uneven terrain. There is a 2-person minimum for this tour to operate.


 


WS#4 Ice Climbing Excursion

Enjoy an introduction to ice climbing on this tour! The Root Glacier offers the perfect venue for people of all ages and skill levels to participate in this exciting and rewarding sport. After being fitted for your gear, you will hike a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920's as a wagon road. Along the way, stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and enjoy spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks. At the glacier's edge, you will learn how to walk in crampons and then hike to a series of ice cliffs. At the cliff, you will gear up and the experienced guides will teach you several ice climbing techniques. You will spend the day practicing your skills and have the chance to climb several cliffs, staying within your comfort zone. NOTE: No experience necessary but participants should be in good physical condition.


WS#5 Root Glacier Hike 1/2 Day

Depart Kennicott on a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920's as a wagon road. Along the way, stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and enjoy spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks. At the base of the Root Glacier, you will strap on crampons and, with simple instruction, begin walking on the glacier. Numerous glacial streams cut deep ravines in the ice, forming shimmering blue pools and waterfalls. After enjoying “lunch with a view” you and your guide start making your way back to the town of Kennecott. This tour will return you to Kennicott in time to relax before dinner or join an optional historic mill tour. Note: No experience necessary but participants should be able to hike about 5 miles on uneven terrain. There is a 2-person minimum for this tour to operate.
