DEN21 Denali Park Tundra Wildlife Tour

For visitors wanting to know about Denali National Park’s varied landscapes and wildlife, this 6-8 hour fully narrated tour takes visitors to the Toklat River at mile 54 of the Park Road. While we can’t predict nor promise when and where wildlife may show up, this tour travels deep into the heart of the park and will allow you ample opportunity to look for Dall sheep, moose, caribou and the elusive grizzly bear. On days when Denali (Mt. McKinley) is visible, it may be possible to travel to Stony Hill Overlook at mile 62 where the mountain first becomes fully visible from base to summit - an impressive view. Two departures daily: the AM departure leaves between 5:30 am and 7:30 am to reach the afternoon train to Fairbanks. The PM departure is for clients arriving from Fairbanks and departs between 13:30 pm and 15:00 pm. Duration: 8-hours

The Denali Natural History Tour is an approximate 5-hour, fully narrated tour that travels to Primrose Ridge at Mile 17 within Denali National Park and Preserve. With a focus on the rich, cultural history of the park, this tour makes several stops with programs that depict the diverse native and early pioneer influences that make Denali special. Hear about the history and culture that surrounds you at a Living History presentation, while visiting Savage Cabin, and find out more about the local native culture and their stories at Primrose Ridge. Your driver/naturalist will provide a great introduction to the landscape, geology and history of Denali National Park. An exhilarating helicopter flight takes you to the top of the ridge overlooking spectacular vistas of the Alaska Range and Yanert Valley dominating the landscape. What a thrill it is to soar like a bird over spectacular scenery and to hike down rather than up, witnessing the spectacular views nature has provided from this vantage point. On your descent down the ridge, Mt. McKinley towers on the western horizon and the 12,339-foot Mt. Deborah and the 13,832-foout Mt. Hayes provide an impressive backdrop to the east. Your naturalist-guide pauses frequently to explain the flora and fauna found in the area. Board a covered, heated powerboat for a 20-mile round trip river safari into “bush Alaska.” You'll travel to a remote trappers camp in the pristine wilderness of the Brushkana Creek valley, deep in the Alaska Range and in the shadow of Mt. McKinley. When you arrive at a remote wilderness camp amidst spectacular surroundings on the Nenana River, you'll enjoy a hot snack while you visit with the locals learning about prospecting, trapping, dog mushing, hunting, and living off the land. Local experts will share their love of Alaska drawing on their own personal perspectives as summer and winter residents. Your tour begins by following the Yanert Valley east to the base of 12,339-foot Mt. Deborah. With icefalls cascading down, the view is absolutely breathtaking. Land on the Yanert Glacier and listen to your pilot as he describes the history of the area while you view glacier moraines, ice bridges, and glacial streams and ponds. The glacier surged a few years ago and the movement caused the surface to buckle and crack, creating peaks and crevasses for added interest. Your return trip takes you over the Sheep Creek Valley for a panoramic view of the Alaska Range and breathtaking views of the West Fork and Nenana glaciers and many other sights.

The Denali Backcountry Adventure is a full day narrated exploration along the Denali Park Road to Denali Backcountry Lodge in Kantishna, returning to the Denali Park entrance in the evening. This trip into Denali National Park travels the entire length of the restricted 95-mile Denali Park Road to Kantishna in our private bus. Our trained naturalist Guide/Driver provides natural history interpretation along the way, helping guests search for bears, moose, caribou and other wildlife while pointing out the biology and geology of the region. We stop along the way for photography and take several rest stops where you can stretch the legs. Snacks, drinks and lunch are provided. Lunch is served at exclusive Denali Backcountry Lodge in Kantishna. Dietary meal options available. Lunch: sandwich bar, soups, fruits, snacks and drinks.

Once called the Stampede Trail, and not shown on most Alaska maps, this road was carved out of the wilderness by early miners working the area's Kantishna gold fields and antimony mine. Interactive two-way radios allow your guide to explain the area's rich history, point out interesting sights along the way, plus provide tips on the condition of the road ahead! Throughout the trip, you'll be able to ask the guide questions and share the experience with your fellow drivers.
